Dissertation Journal

Editorial, Print, Bookbinding

Design a typographic publication for a collection of 11 dissertations from graduating designers.

‘Apperception’ – the mental process by which a person makes sense of an idea by assimilating it to the body of ideas he or she already possesses.

Critical reflection is a key part of the process of writing and reading a dissertation - comparing your thoughts to those written.

The publication is designed to encourage the reader to slow down, pause and reflect on the writing. The format is A3, creating visual balance and clarity through the use of space. Each of the dissertations are classified using colour; with soft tones that reflect the quiet and reflective nature of the design. The first and last word of each page are also highlighted in this colour, which acts as a reminder to review each page from start to finish.

The use of ellipses throughout the publication creates the idea of a pause, where the reader can reflect and consider their own ideas in response to the text.
